President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized that unity, though often challenging, remains the most effective path toward achieving shared prosperity and regional stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He made these remarks during his keynote address at the official launch of the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary celebration in Accra.
“As we look into the next 50 years, let unity and solidarity lead us,” he stated.
“Let unity be our guide in how we respond to insecurity, manage our diversity, and build prosperity together.”
President Mahama highlighted that since assuming office, he has prioritized diplomatic re-engagement with Ghana’s Sahelian neighbors to promote cooperation and peace in the sub-region.
“Ghana has appointed a special envoy to initiate high-level conversations with the Alliance of Sahel States,” he emphasized.
He further noted that he has personally led missions to foster trust, rebuild communication channels, and affirm the sub-region’s shared aspirations and beliefs.
These efforts, he said, reinforce the idea that the sub-region has a shared destiny.
“We need to engage to foster lasting solutions to the challenges in the sub-region for socio-economic development,” he added.
As ECOWAS marks five decades of existence, President Mahama’s message calls on all member states to embrace solidarity as a foundation for growth, peace, and a prosperous future.
