The running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has presented a cheque of GH¢50,000 to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Cancer Foundation.
The donation aims to provide enhanced cancer awareness and support to teachers and education professionals affected by cancer.
The gesture reflects the NDC’s commitment to improving healthcare and wellness within the education sector.
Accompanying her during the presentation was Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, the Member of Parliament for Adentan Constituency, who also contributed an additional GH¢10,000 to the foundation.
The GNAT Cancer Foundation was launched to combat the challenges posed by cancer, it focuses on providing financial assistance and support to teachers and their families while also promoting cancer awareness.
The foundation has underscored that cancer now stands as one of the most formidable health challenges facing teachers in the country, with an alarming estimate of 27,000 new cancer cases recorded annually in Ghana.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang, a former lecturer and the first female chancellor of the University of Cape Coast during the donation ceremony said there was urgency need to act swiftly to support teachers who are grappling with the disease.
She called for assistance from corporations, religious bodies, and individual philanthropists to join the fight against cancer among teachers.
The GNAT Cancer Foundation is dedicated to increasing awareness and education on cancer prevention, facilitating access to world-class treatment, and ensuring responsible management of the funds raised for cancer care.
The association reports a concerning trend in which the prevalence of various types of cancer, including breast, brain, prostate, throat, and skin cancers, continues to afflict teachers disproportionately.
Receiving the donation, chairperson of GNAT cancer Fundraising committee, Christian Yaw Adinkra expressed gratitude to the National Democratic Congress for “thinking about teachers welfare”
He said “Every teacher facing cancer should have the opportunity to receive the support they need”.
He reiterated call for greater collective action to alleviate the burdens posed by the disease within the educational community.
