Assembly members of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly on Wednesday, October 6, 2021, left the Central Regional Minister on her knees weeping as she begged that they confirm the President’s nominee for the area.
Justina Marigold Assan who was literally weeping while on her knees was seen pleading with Members of the Assembly to ensure that Mr Ernest Arthur was endorsed on his second attempt.
But livid vowed to teach the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee a lesson his life indicating that “We cannot work with violent and incompetent MCE who even doesn’t respect us”
Prior to the voting, the body language of the Assembly Members showed all was not well with the incumbent MCE as heavy security and hundreds of supporters of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) thronged stormed the premises of the assembly in anticipation of an already predicted outcome
The programme which was supposed to start at 4 pm started at 6 pm with an excuse that the confirmation cannot go on without the Central Regional Minister, Mrs Justina Marigold Assan and that worsened woes of the nominee
Upon the arrival of Mrs Marigold Assan, the programme started but while delivering her speech, she tearfully knelt to beg the Assembly Members to consider the development of Cape Coast and forgive the incumbent MCE if he has offended anyone.
The Assembly Members are made up of 65, with 44 being elected Assembly Members and 21 government appointees.
Out of 65 Assembly Members who voted, only 40 voted in favour of the nominee, while the remaining 25 rejected his nomination.
The incumbent was expected to get at least two-thirds of the total votes cast to be confirmed but was called to go for another voting which caused confusion between the assembly Members and the Presiding Member.
Assembly Members rejected the second voting requested by the Presiding Member (PM), Nana Awuku claiming that it is not in the constitution.
