The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced an ambitious target to plant 30 million seedlings nationwide before the end of the rainy season, as Ghana officially begins the 2026 planting season under government’s Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative.
The launch took place today at West Africa Senior High School (WASS), Adenta, as part of activities marking World Environment Day.

According to the Minister, the new target builds on the success recorded in 2025, when more than 31 million trees were planted across the country through the joint efforts of government, schools, communities, traditional authorities, development partners, and ordinary citizens.
Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah said the 2026 campaign will place stronger emphasis not only on planting but also on nurturing, monitoring, and post-planting care to ensure that seedlings survive and contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s reforestation drive.

He noted that tree planting must move beyond symbolic exercises and become a sustained national responsibility rooted in community ownership and environmental stewardship.
The Minister particularly appealed to young people to take a leading role in the campaign, urging them to become environmental ambassadors in their schools, homes, and communities.

He stressed that the fight against climate change, deforestation, and environmental degradation requires active citizen participation and long-term commitment.

The Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative forms part of government’s broader agenda to restore degraded landscapes, protect biodiversity, improve climate resilience, and build a greener national economy.

Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah said Ghana’s environmental future will depend on how seriously citizens protect the trees they plant today.
