A married woman who pretended to be pregnant has been taken into custody for attempting to abduct a one-week-old infant from the Zebilla District Hospital in the Upper East Region’s Bawku West district. The suspect’s arrest came after a local chief provided a tip to the authorities.
The hospital’s principal staff intervened quickly, saving the suspect from being attacked by a mob. She has since been moved to Bawku and is currently in police custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Dr. Ayobi Abdul Rahman confirmed that the baby has been safely recovered and reunited with its distressed mother, emphasizing that the infant is unharmed and in good health.
Although the police are withholding the identity of the suspected baby thief, it has been reported that the suspect, after facing societal pressure due to being married for a year without having a child, deceived her family by pretending to be pregnant.
According to reports, the suspect took advantage of a moment when the mother was not paying attention and stole the baby, intending to present it as her own newborn. However, her plan was foiled when the chief learned of the situation and alerted the police, leading to her arrest.
