The chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Agyemang Badu II, has said that he wants to invite mining companies to work in his area. This is to create more jobs and help the area grow.
In a video seen by GhanaWeb, Agyemang Badu II spoke at a public event. He said that mining is important for development, but it must be done in a responsible and fair way.
He listed some rules that companies must follow if they want to mine in Dormaa. One of these rules is that they must agree to share 50% of their profits with the government.
“This is big news. It’s time for me to let those who are willing to follow my rules take out our resources. This way, our President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo can make more money. It won’t be like other places where they take 93% and the government only gets 7%, no! In Dormaa, once you get back the money you invested, you will split the profit in half. You will give 50% to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and keep the rest as your profit,” he said.
He added that the money going to the government would help Dormaa a lot through royalty payments.
He also said that some companies have already agreed to this plan and have paid a lot of money to the Dormaa state.
“The money paid to Dormaa cannot be given back. Right now, the money is in our Commercial Bank account, and my chiefs know how much we have. In time, we will tell everyone how much it is and decide what to do with the money,” he said.
“People of Dormaa will do well while I am in charge. If possible, I want to start before this year ends. Every child born in Dormaa will get money, whether they are from Dormaa or not, as long as they are born on Dormaa land,” he said.
Over the years, Agyemang Badu II has talked about how Ghana gets money from its minerals. He has said that it’s not fair how little mining companies pay to the government.
