The Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced plans to spill 50,000 CFS of water but assures that the water will largely remain within the river channel.
However, the VRA says areas like Siamekome, Atsukope, and parts of Awadiwoekome Island may experience minimal impacts.
The Volta River Authority announced the plan on 11th July 2024 at a one-day workshop in the Central Tongu District to prepare for a planned precautionary spillage from the Akosombo Dam.
The Authority stated that the timing of the spillage will depend on rainfall patterns in the northern part of the country and Burkina Faso.
VRA assured that communities along the river banks and islands will be informed and evacuated before the spillage
The workshop which was part of engagements with stakeholders and community members was heavily attended and focused on discussing potential impacts, evacuation plans, and distribution of farm inputs to affected victims.
Speaking at the event, the representative of the National Disaster Management Organization said over 3,000 bags of fertilizers have been distributed among victims while resettlement efforts were ongoing.
The NADMO representative announced that validation exercises were also being conducted for a simulation exercise to be carried out to ensure preparedness.
District Chief Executive for Central Tongu Thomas Moore Zonyrah reiterated the government’s commitment to resettling affected communities.
According to him several meetings have been held with the inter-ministerial committee and plans are underway to complete ongoing projects, secure additional land for future projects, and construct over 250 housing units.
