The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) has recorded another major milestone with the successful launch of the Akyem Kotoku Area Cooperative Mining Scheme in the Eastern Region, reinforcing efforts to transform Ghana’s small-scale mining sector through responsible, sustainable, and community-driven practices.

The initiative is expected to create new economic opportunities for local communities while promoting environmental stewardship and protecting natural resources for future generations.
The launch brought together government officials, traditional leaders, and stakeholders committed to building a more structured and accountable mining industry. Among the dignitaries present was His Royal Majesty Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, who pledged the full support of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area towards the successful implementation of the programme.
Also in attendance was the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, whose leadership continues to drive government’s agenda of formalising the small-scale mining sector and replacing illegal and environmentally destructive mining practices with responsible alternatives.

The event was further graced by the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, and the Birim North Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Antwi Hakeem Abdul, underscoring the broad institutional support behind the initiative.
As a flagship programme of President John Dramani Mahama, rCOMSDEP is designed to promote responsible mining, skills development, environmental protection, and community empowerment while creating sustainable livelihoods for people in mining communities.

The launch of the Akyem Kotoku Area Cooperative Mining Scheme is being viewed as another significant step towards building a legal, responsible, and sustainable small-scale mining industry that delivers lasting prosperity, protects the environment, and ensures that local communities benefit meaningfully from Ghana’s mineral wealth.
