A leading member of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) Kwame Jantuah has told President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to apologise to the people of Ghana for the economic hardships that the people are saddled with.
He recounted the economic hardships that led to pensioners picketing over their inclusion in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) have collapsed several businesses, thereby further exacerbating the difficulties.
Contributing to a discussion on the New Day show on TV3 Friday July 19 regarding the economic challenges, Mr Jantuah noted that Ghanaians are forgiving therefore if Mr Akufo-Addo renders a sincere apology they are likely to accept it.
“Is this not the first time pensioners have picked? Ask for forgiveness from Ghanaians because Ghanaians are very forgiving, if you accept you that have done something wrong they will forgive you, apologize to them that you haven’t managed the economy well.”
In the area of good governance, Mr Jantuah observed that there are defects in the governance style that must be addressed through constitutional amendments.
For instance, he said too much power has been given to the president. This, he said, must change.
“The winner takes all concept, is it helping? Local government, is it not centralized at the upper echelons, local government is not working now. if it was a working station in the district we would have been able to handle it.
“The constitution, this constitution has ruled for over 30 years, there are certain parts of it hurting us today, one of it is executive power, are we ready to look at the executive power?
“I feel that the next president, the first mindset should be how do we have a government of national unity. There are brains who are sitting on the fence who can come and help.”
