Workers of the Pambros Salt Factory, located along the Weija Junction stretch, are protesting against what they allege is an attempt by some traditional authorities to allocate portions of the salt mining area to Chinese business interests.
Dressed in red and black attire, the workers chanted slogans and voiced their strong opposition to the move, which they feared would lead to massive job losses.
Citi News understands that over 1,000 workers may lose their jobs if the salt mining area is handed over.
Several aggrieved workers who spoke to Citi News expressed deep concern about the potential impact on their livelihoods and called for immediate intervention to prevent the takeover.
One stated, “We notice that the Chinese people started encroaching on our land. They are destroying our land. We won’t agree since we don’t have anywhere going. Pambros produces salt and same as Sege, so we are contributing our quota.
“We even learnt that the Jubilee House spends a lot on salt. So if our jobs are destroyed how can we support the country as local producers? President Akufo Addo must act on this. They have even employed the services of land guard and it is scary.”
Another person added, “We must not sit as a country and watch as ordinary Ghanaians suffer. It is unfair to give our land to the Chinese. I want to beg the traditional authority to ensure justice is served in this matter. They just came to take over our land without our knowledge.”
The workers are calling on President Akufo-Addo to act on the matter, citing the government’s significant expenditure on salt.
They also expressed fear over the employment of land guards by the alleged investors, describing the situation as “scary”.
