A member of the Greater Accra legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawrence Roland Arthur, has lambasted the National Peace Council for its silence on the alleged electoral irregularities perpetrated by the Electoral Commission.
Mr. Roland Arthur in a statement said the Peace Council’s inaction “emboldens perpetrators of electoral irregularities and undermines trust in the system.”
He criticized the Peace council for failing to condemn the Electoral Commission’s alleged manipulations, including the transfer of voters from their original registration centers.
Mr. Roland Arthur believes such actions of the Electoral commission threatens the integrity of the electoral process.
“The National Peace Council’s silence is deafening and unacceptable. By not speaking out against such irregularities, they are complicit in undermining our democracy,” Mr. Arthur said.
He urged the Peace Council to take a proactive stance in promoting transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
“Their silence is a disservice to the Ghanaian people, who expect them to be a neutral arbiter in ensuring peaceful and credible elections.”
Mr. Arthur however, commended the NDC’s chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia for outlining preconditions for their commitment to peace, including addressing electoral irregularities and ensuring a level playing field.
He urged the Peace Council to support such preconditions and work towards a transparent electoral process.
“The Peace Council’s fixation on securing commitments from the NDC to a peace pact, while ignoring the government’s attempts to undermine it, is misguided,” Mr. Arthur said.
“They must adopt a proactive stance and condemn the EC’s actions to ensure a free and fair election.”
Lawrence Roland Arthur’s call comes on the back of growing concerns about the credibility of the electoral process ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Many Ghanaians, including civil society organizations, have expressed outrage and disappointment at the National Peace Council’s continued silence regarding the actions and inactions of the Electoral Commission.
