The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced the commencement of a controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam due to rising water levels.
In a statement released on Thursday, GWCL urged all residents living in communities downstream of the dam to evacuate immediately to avoid the risk of flooding.
The utility company stressed that the spillage is a necessary safety measure to protect the structural integrity of the dam and surrounding areas.
“The water level in the Weija Dam has exceeded its safe operational capacity. In order to prevent any potential breach or overflow, we have initiated a controlled spillage,” the statement read.
“We are therefore urging residents in low-lying areas downstream to move to higher ground for their safety.”
GWCL is working in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), local assemblies, and other relevant agencies to manage the situation and assist affected residents.
Residents in areas such as Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Weija, SCC, and parts of Gbawe have been identified as most at risk.
Authorities are advising the public to stay informed through official channels and to comply promptly with all safety directives.
This is not the first time the Weija Dam has undergone controlled spillage during the rainy season, but officials warn that the frequency and volume of spillages may increase with changing weather patterns.
