The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has announced plans to reintroduce the Town Council as part of efforts to strengthen sanitation enforcement and sustain the gains made during the national clean-up exercise held on July 10 and 11, 2026.
Speaking in an interview with Sena Numbo on Gold Morning Conversation (GMC), Hon. Allotey said the sheer volume of waste and silt removed during the two-day exercise underscored the need for a permanent enforcement mechanism to keep the city clean.
“The heap of debris and silt collected was enormous. That is why we are bringing back the Town Council,” he stated.
The Mayor, who oversees Okaikwei South, Odododiodoo and Ablekuma South, disclosed that about 170 truckloads of silt and debris were evacuated from the Avenue area alone during the exercise.
He said cleanup operations have been completed across most parts of his jurisdiction, with only North Kaneshie Last Stop, sections of Bubuashie, and parts along the Town Council corridor still requiring attention.
“We have cleared all the places under my jurisdiction, except North Kaneshie Last Stop, part of Bubuashie, and some areas around the Town Council line that still need to be cleared,” he said.
Hon. Allotey also revealed that the Kaneshie Lorry Station is expected to undergo redevelopment after the completion of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project. He noted that while discussions on the project have progressed following a meeting held earlier in the day, the commencement date is yet to be announced.
The Mayor further appealed to residents to support the Assembly’s sanitation drive by reporting any uncleared silt or debris within their communities. He provided a dedicated hotline, 0242 270 212, for the public to report locations that require immediate attention.
