Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, has commemorated the 77th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in Accra . This solemn occasion, according to the Minister reminds us of the extraordinary courage of those who serve on the frontlines of conflict, fostering peace and restoring hope for millions in challenging situations around the world.
Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that United Nations peacekeeping represented humanity’s collective commitment to prevent and limit armed conflict, sustain peace, and address evolving threats to global peace and security. He noted that over the past several decades, peacekeeping had consistently demonstrated its effectiveness as a vital multilateral tool for promoting stability.
By contributing to the protection of civilians, empowering communities, and supporting humanitarian efforts, he explained that peacekeeping had helped build safer, more resilient societies, while enhancing the participation of women and youth in decision-making processes.
However, the Minister highlighted that UN peace operations today faced demands that were not only expanding in scope but also deepening in complexity, even as the global order experienced increasing fragmentation and unpredictability. He detailed that from escalating conflicts fueled by heightened geopolitical tensions, to a trust deficit among some actors, the destabilizing impact of climate change, and evolving security threats, peacekeepers confronted multidimensional challenges in an increasingly difficult and intricate environment.
He articulated that adapting peacekeeping to the changing world called for an approach centered on reinforcing global and regional partnerships, while advancing deeper multilateral cooperation.
“As the global landscape for peacekeeping grows increasingly complex, peacekeeping must evolve to maintain its vital role. Reflecting on the theme for today’s event, we are confronted with the question of how we can strengthen partnerships and multilateralism to meet the peacekeeping challenges of tomorrow.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu concluded his statement by reiterating that as one of the top contributors to UN missions, Ghana served as a significant example of global solidarity in action and service to humanity. He highlighted that Ghana’s contribution to global peace had been tremendous, and that their brave men and women peacekeepers had, through their dedication in Liberia, South Sudan, and beyond, demonstrated to the world that lasting stability was achievable even under the most difficult circumstances.
“As a firm believer in the principles of consensus-building and collective action,
Ghana will continue to advocate for a more robust and inclusive multilateral system, because multilateralism, though imperfect, is still the best tool we have to sustain.” He elaborated. “Peacekeeping efforts in an increasingly fractured world. We remain committed to deep and structured reform efforts that can deliver effective responses for the future of peacekeeping.”
He affirmed that as they honored their fallen and recognized the bravery, professionalism, and commitment of the Forces, they were reminded that it was only through a shared vision of human dignity that they could uphold the worth of every individual and build a more secure world.
