In response to a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases within the University of Ghana community, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced proactive measures to contain the outbreak and safeguard the health of students and staff.

In a press release issued on Thursday, June 26, 2025, the GHS confirmed that the current cases reported on campus are mild, with no hospitalizations recorded to date.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and working in collaboration with university authorities to implement effective containment strategies,Our focus is on ensuring that all necessary health protocols are followed to prevent any escalation of cases” part of the statement read.

Although Ghana has seen an overall decline in COVID-19 cases over the past year, this localized outbreak is a reminder that the virus remains a public health concern. The GHS urged all members of the university community to remain vigilant and continue observing preventive measures.

“We urge everyone within the university community to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures. It’s crucial that anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing seeks medical attention immediately.”

The Ministry of Health has reiterated the importance of following established prevention protocols to curb the spread of the virus.

These include maintaining social distance, wearing face masks in enclosed spaces, practicing regular hand hygiene, and avoiding large gatherings.

Minister of Health Reassures Public

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, in a press release, assured the University of Ghana community and the general public of the government’s commitment to curbing the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.

“We assure the University community and the public that we are taking all necessary steps to prevent further spread of COVID-19. Our surveillance systems are robust, and we are prepared to respond swiftly to any changes in the situation.”

As part of ongoing efforts, GHS continues to conduct nationwide surveillance through its national influenza and COVID-19 monitoring programme. The health body is also collaborating with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) to enhance testing and data collection.

In response to the recent developments, students of the University of Ghana are being encouraged to take personal responsibility for their health and well-being.

While the current outbreak remains localized, health officials emphasize that continued vigilance is essential. The public is reminded that frequent handwashing and mask-wearing in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces remain key components in preventing further transmission of COVID-19.

For more information or to report symptoms, individuals are urged to contact their nearest health facility.
