Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, has defied her party’s national leadership and declared her intention to contest tomorrow’s parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the constituency.
Her decision follows the Accra High Court’s dismissal of her application to stop the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting the rerun, ruling that the EC must fulfill its constitutional mandate to ensure full parliamentary representation.
Despite the NPP’s national directive that the party will “not participate in any rerun”—based on their belief that Afriyie had won by a 414-vote margin—the candidate remains undeterred. Speaking on Neat FM, she stated, “My name is on the ballot paper for tomorrow, and my constituents have assured me of victory. We are voting.
Court ruling
On Wednesday, Justice Ali Baba Abature dismissed Afriyie’s injunction application, describing it as “unmeritorious.” The court argued that delaying the rerun would deprive the people of Ablekuma North of parliamentary representation and that any grievances could be addressed later through appropriate legal channels.
The ruling cleared the EC to proceed with the scheduled rerun on 11 July 2025, after months of legal and political wrangling over the December 2024 parliamentary results.
The NPP leadership has strongly opposed the rerun, maintaining that Afriyie had already won the seat with a margin of 414 votes. According to the party, the EC’s decision to conduct a rerun undermines the integrity of the electoral process and disrespects prior court directives to collate and declare existing results.
General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua described the EC’s move as “shameful” and insisted that the party would not participate in any rerun exercise.
The Electoral Commission has assured the public of a transparent and credible rerun, urging all stakeholders to respect the outcome in the interest of democratic stability.
