Ghana is on course to achieve at least 35% renewable energy in its national power generation mix by the end of the year, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced.
Delivering the opening address at Africa Oil Week 2025, Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to a green energy transition, noting that President John Dramani Mahama had expanded the ministry’s mandate to reflect the importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
“Ghana is deeply committed to diversifying our energy sources to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, minimise pollution, and ensure energy security for all,” he said.
While pledging greater emphasis on renewable energy including hydro, solar, and wind. Mr. Jinapor underscored that Africa must approach its energy transition pragmatically. He stressed that development must not be sacrificed in the name of transition, highlighting the urgent need to address widespread energy poverty across the continent.
“Our legacy must be one of prosperity, powered by our own hands and built on our own terms,” he told delegates.
