The First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, has urged world leaders to prioritize policies that protect and empower children, particularly those affected by conflict and humanitarian crises.
She made the call at the 7th Annual Prayer Service for Children, held at the Church Centre for the United Nations, Tillman Chapel in New York.
Addressing the gathering of diplomats, faith leaders, and development partners, Mrs. Mahama commended World Vision International and its partners for their commitment to vulnerable children across the globe.
“We come from different nations and cultures, but we are united by our shared faith and responsibility to protect children everywhere,” the First Lady said. “Through prayer and collective action, we can create a world where every child is safe, nurtured, and empowered to achieve their full potential.”
This year’s event was themed “A Moment of Hope,” which Mrs. Mahama described as “deeply relevant” as global leaders converge for the 80th United Nations General Assembly at a time of rapid change in the global order.
Quoting President John Dramani Mahama, she noted:
“The challenges facing our children today are immense, but they can be tackled through decisive leadership.”
The First Lady expressed concern over the plight of children in conflict zones, particularly in Africa. She stressed that many are robbed of their childhoods, forced into combat, and left with deep scars.
“These are precious lives destroyed by circumstances beyond their control,” she said. “When nations fail to safeguard the home, strengthen communities, and nurture the young, it is children who suffer the most.”
Mrs. Mahama highlighted the power of prayer as a source of strength and guidance, not only for children facing adversity but also for leaders making critical decisions. Citing Proverbs 9:10, she reminded the audience that, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
She later led a special prayer for children, asking God to provide for their daily needs, protect them from harm, and surround them with kindness and opportunity.
“Bless those who dedicate their time and resources to care for children,” she prayed. “May these children grow in wisdom, strength, and joy, knowing that You love them.”
Concluding her remarks, Mrs. Mahama called on leaders worldwide to remain steadfast in their commitment to children’s welfare.
“In this ‘Moment of Hope’, let us renew our collective commitment. I know that the Almighty God whom we serve will continue to bless and guide the President of Ghana and leaders everywhere to implement policies that protect our children, open opportunities, and prepare them for a good future.”
The prayer service, organized annually by World Vision International, brought together faith leaders and advocates from across the world to intercede for children living in poverty, conflict, and vulnerable conditions.
