The Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) convened a high-level side event during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80), rallying First Ladies from across the continent around a unified campaign for women and girls.
Themed “Building Resilience for Women and Girls in the Face of Climate Change and Conflict,” the gathering addressed the disproportionate burden women and girls bear during displacement, resource scarcity, and violence triggered by environmental degradation and armed conflict.
In a central outcome, the First Ladies launched a campaign pledge to push for policies, mobilise resources, and implement programmes tailored to women and girls in crisis-affected regions.
Ghana’s First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, whose commitment statement focused on “Strength,” underscored the resilience of African women and girls:
“In the face of climate and conflict challenges, their courage sustains families and communities. By investing in their strength, we build resilience for generations to come.”
The pledge demonstrates the First Ladies’ shared determination to drive African-led solutions for global challenges, with women and girls at the heart of sustainable development.
