President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York.
The closed-door discussions were expected to center on pressing global challenges, including peace and security, climate resilience, health sovereignty, and sustainable development.
Both leaders have in recent months maintained an active dialogue on Africa’s priorities within the UN system.
This latest engagement, the second in less than a month, highlights the importance of Africa’s voice in shaping the multilateral agenda.
As the African Union Champion for Financial Institutions, President Mahama has been at the forefront of calls for reforms in global financing to support health systems, infrastructure, and inclusive development.
Secretary-General Guterres has also consistently emphasized the need for stronger partnerships with Africa, particularly in addressing conflict resolution, climate change adaptation, and the financing gap that hampers the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Observers note that the meeting underscores Mahama’s increasing international role as a statesman advocating for equity, resilience, and reform in the global system.
