“NPP is a dead party” – Alhassan Suhuyini

Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Hon. Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, has strongly dismissed predictions of a Bawumia victory in the next election, insisting that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not perform worse than the “disastrous” Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking on TV3’s Keypoints programme this morning, where he appeared alongside co-panelist Dr. Zaao, Suhuyini said: “It will be a disaster if any government today or in the future ever does worse than Nana Akufo-Addo. Because the bar under Nana Akufo-Addo was too low.”

He criticized Dr. Zaao’s confidence in Bawumia, calling it statistically unfounded: “What is still ridiculous is the claim Dr. Zaao makes when he says that he can say emphatically, and the word he used, unequivocally, that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia would be the next president.”

Suhuyini further challenged the statistical basis of Dr. Zaao’s argument, insisting that even the data presented by the show’s host, Alfred, did not support such confident forecasts.

“Alfred, the ridiculousness, the statistics you put out does not support the claim that he makes. Even if he’s not playing God, statistically, he’s still incorrect,” the lawmaker posited.

According to the Tamale North MP, the current state of the NPP reflects a party in crisis, disorganized, unfocused, and failing to rebuild its foundations.

“Currently, any fair-minded observer will tell you that the party is dead. They need to resuscitate the party. They need to reorganize the party, which they are not doing, unfortunately, because they say they want to roof a building that doesn’t have a strong foundation. And so, they are just wasting roofing sheets,” he said.

Although Suhuyini described himself as a “consummate democrat” who desires a strong opposition to keep the government on its toes, he stopped short of sympathizing with the NPP.

“I’m only perhaps concerned because I’m a consummate democrat. And I will want to have an opposition that can keep my government on its toes. Otherwise, I should be singing praises to God that they are engaged in an exercise that will not resuscitate their party, that will not make it stronger,” he noted.

Suhuyini used the opportunity to assure Ghanaians that the current NDC government under President John Dramani Mahama is committed to better governance than what was witnessed under the Akufo-Addo administration.

“Sometimes I don’t even feel comfortable measuring our successes and our performance with Nana Addo’s regime. Many of us in the NDC do not want to compare our successes with that government. If we could erase it in our history, perhaps we should be doing so,” he lamented

In a damning reflection on Ghana’s recent political history, the deputy Roads minister minced no words as he delivered a sharp rebuke of the Akufo-Addo administration. He argued that the failings of the outgone NPP government had set a governance standard so low that it now serves as a cautionary benchmark, not a model to follow.

This statement, heavy with both critique and conviction, reflected a broader frustration about the legacy of the NPP government. For Suhuyini, measuring progress or national success against a regime he considers to have overseen an era of economic hardship, broken promises, and institutional decay is simply not good enough.

He advised that any administration that aspires to lead Ghana forward must aim far higher than what the NPP left behind, not just in economic figures, but in credibility, governance integrity, and public accountability.
