The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has held high-level talks with the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea, Woo Won-shik, aimed at strengthening parliamentary cooperation and deepening bilateral relations between the two countries.
The meeting formed part of President Mahama’s official visit to South Korea and comes ahead of the celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between Ghana and South Korea.
During the meeting, President Mahama expressed appreciation for the warm reception extended to him and his delegation by the Korean Parliament.
“This is my fourth visit to Korea, and I am deeply grateful for the warm reception and hospitality extended to my delegation,” President Mahama said.
He noted that the visit reflects the long-standing and cordial relations between Ghana and South Korea, which he said are built on shared democratic values and mutual respect.
President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance, describing the country as a beacon of democracy in a region that has recently experienced political instability.
“Ghana remains committed to democratic governance and continues to serve as a beacon of democracy in our region,” he stated.
The President also commended Speaker Woo Won-shik and the Korean Parliament for their role in ensuring stability during South Korea’s recent political challenges.
President Mahama, who previously served three terms as a Member of Parliament, emphasized his strong belief in parliamentary democracy as a foundation for national development.
“As someone who served three terms in Ghana’s Parliament, I strongly believe in parliamentary democracy as a key pillar for national development,” he said.
The Ghanaian leader further highlighted outcomes from earlier bilateral discussions with the President of South Korea, which resulted in the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between the two countries.
According to him, the agreements cover key areas including climate change, maritime safety, and digital innovation.
President Mahama also underscored South Korea’s global reputation in technology and innovation, noting that Ghana stands to benefit from stronger collaboration in those sectors.
“Korea’s strength in digital technology, artificial intelligence and innovation presents important opportunities for collaboration with Ghana,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the agreements signed and the broader engagements during the visit would further deepen cooperation between Ghana and South Korea.
“I am confident that the agreements we have signed, together with our ongoing engagements, will further strengthen the partnership between our two countries,” President Mahama added.
The meeting forms part of a series of high-level engagements by President Mahama during his visit to South Korea aimed at enhancing economic cooperation, technological partnerships and diplomatic relations between the two nations.
