The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has described the Green City Project as a transformative initiative aimed at reshaping communities, improving livelihoods, and promoting environmentally sustainable development in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking at the launch of the project, Dr. Amoakohene stated that the initiative goes beyond the mere construction of buildings, emphasizing that it represents a bold vision for sustainable urban growth and modern community planning.
“This project is not just construction of buildings, but for us it is going to shape our communities, improve livelihoods, and ensure that our development is environmentally friendly and sustainable,” he said.
According to the Minister, the Ashanti Region has witnessed rapid urban population growth over the years, resulting in increased demand for affordable, quality, and well-planned housing.
“It is therefore refreshing that we have seen this project coming up for the good people of Ghana and for the Ashanti Region,” he noted.
Dr. Amoakohene explained that the project, which is expected to deliver more than 1,000 housing units, reflects government’s commitment to providing decent and environmentally conscious housing for citizens.
He commended President John Dramani Mahama for championing inclusive development policies that integrate public sector leadership with private sector participation to drive national progress.
“This reflects your commitment in making sure that public sector leadership and private sector participation are well integrated for national development,” he stated.
The Regional Minister also highlighted the employment opportunities expected to be generated through the project, particularly for the youth and local contractors in the region.
Dr. Amoakohene further acknowledged the contribution of traditional authorities, especially Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for donating the land for the project three years ago.
“I wish to acknowledge the role of our traditional authorities, in particular, His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu, who graciously donated this land for this project,” he said.
He urged developers and implementing agencies to uphold high standards of excellence, transparency, and sustainability throughout the execution of the project.
The Minister assured that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the people of Ashanti would protect and support the initiative to ensure its success.
Recalling the Ashanti Region’s historical reputation as the “Garden City of West Africa,” Dr. Amoakohene expressed optimism that the Green City Project would help restore the region’s green and environmentally friendly outlook.
“The Ashanti Region used to be known as the Garden City of West Africa, and I want to assure you, Mr. President, that this Green City Project will be generously protected,” he affirmed.
