Some Ghanaians living in South Africa have expressed a strong desire to return home following the latest wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of the country.
The situation has heightened fear and uncertainty among affected Ghanaians, many of whom have appealed to the Government of Ghana for immediate evacuation.
Government’s planned evacuation exercise, however, suffered a setback after authorities postponed the operation to a later date due to technical challenges involving screening processes and permits required from South African authorities for the aircraft to land.
The delay reportedly caused considerable anxiety among the stranded Ghanaians, who say they are desperate to return to safety in Ghana.
Several of them conveyed their frustrations and concerns directly to the Minister for Foreign Affairs during his recent visit to South Africa. According to the affected individuals, the uncertainty surrounding the evacuation arrangements has worsened their fears amid the ongoing tensions.
Officials say the government is actively engaging the relevant South African authorities to resolve the outstanding issues to ensure the evacuation exercise takes place this week.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry has assured affected citizens that efforts are being intensified to secure all necessary clearances and logistical arrangements for their safe return home.
The latest xenophobic incidents in South Africa have once again raised concerns about the safety of African migrants and foreign workers living in the country, with several communities reportedly facing threats and intimidation.
