The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a teacher of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing him assaulting a female student on campus.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Eric Buernortey Apaflo, was arrested by a Nyinahin District Police patrol team on Sunday, June 8, at about 7:00 p.m. after reports emerged of an assault involving an 18-year-old female student, Patience Chibu.
According to preliminary police investigations, Apaflo, who serves as the caretaker of the school’s hostel, confronted the female student and several male students over alleged misconduct at the hostel. During the confrontation, a disagreement reportedly escalated, leading to the alleged assault on the student.
The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, sparked outrage among students. Police say some students responded by pelting stones at the suspect, while others allegedly invited youth from the town to the school hostel in an attempt to attack him.
However, the situation was swiftly brought under control following the intervention of a police patrol team, preventing further escalation and possible violence.
Police have issued a Medical Report Form to the victim to facilitate medical examination and treatment. Meanwhile, the suspect remains in police custody and is assisting investigators with their inquiries.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands. Authorities urged citizens to use lawful and peaceful means to address grievances and disputes.
Confirming the arrest in a statement, the Police Command assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
The statement was signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Antwi.
