The Government has assured Ghanaians that its response to the recent floods affecting seven regions has been swift, coordinated and ongoing, with relief supplies already reaching some of the worst-hit communities while additional consignments are being dispatched nationwide.
Addressing the media, Hon Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications said the floods had impacted seven regions, with the Greater Accra, Volta and Central regions suffering the most severe devastation.
“I want to assure the public that the government’s response has been swift, coordinated, and continuous,” the Minister said.
The Minister disclosed that, acting on the direct instructions of President John Dramani Mahama, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), through the Relief and Donations Committee, had begun the large-scale mobilisation and distribution of emergency relief items.
The supplies include food, clean drinking water, temporary shelter materials, blankets and medical supplies for displaced families.
According to the Minister, the distribution exercise is being carried out in phases to ensure an orderly and efficient response.
The first phase, undertaken on Wednesday, July 1, saw emergency relief items delivered to La Dade Kotopon Municipality, Ayawaso Central and Korley Klottey Municipality.
A second phase followed on Thursday, July 2, covering seven critically affected districts: Krowor Municipality, Ga East (Dome-Kwabenya), Shai Osudoku, Ada East, Ablekuma North, Ada West and Okaikwei North.
The Minister also assured residents in the Central, Volta, Western, Ashanti, Western North and Eastern regions that government relief would soon reach their communities.
“To our brothers and sisters in the Central, Volta, Western, Ashanti, Western North, and Eastern Regions: please be assured that you have not been forgotten,” the Minister stated.
The Minister explained that while immediate attention was focused on the large-scale displacement in Greater Accra, logistics teams were simultaneously preparing consignments for all other affected regions.
“Even as we focus on the high-density displacements in Greater Accra, logistics columns are currently being organised to dispatch massive relief packages to the Central Region, Volta Region and all other affected districts across the country,” the Minister said.
The Minister added that NADMO regional coordinators were already on the ground coordinating operations, with additional relief supplies expected to begin arriving in affected communities from Saturday.
Government also urged citizens to remain vigilant by adhering to safety warnings and promptly reporting emergencies to the appropriate authorities.
Reaffirming the Mahama administration’s commitment to supporting flood victims, the Minister pledged that government would continue its interventions until all displaced persons had been assisted and affected communities fully restored.
“Your government, the Mahama administration, will not rest until every displaced family is safely housed, every affected district is restored, and our communities are rebuilt to be stronger and more resilient against future weather anomalies,” the Minister said.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu also expressed appreciation to emergency service personnel, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, health workers and volunteer groups for their tireless efforts in responding to the disaster, assuring the public that regular updates would continue as recovery operations progress.
