The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) views with profound sadness and grave concern the catastrophic flooding that has ravaged several communities across the nation following the torrential rainfall. The resultant loss of precious human lives and the extensive destruction of property and livelihoods are deeply distressing and demand a collective national response.

On behalf of our membership comprising private newspaper publishers and digital news platforms across the country we extend our heartfelt solidarity to all Ghanaian communities, families, and individuals who have suffered losses during this difficult period. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones, and we stand with all who have been displaced or whose properties have been submerged.

While the scale of the disaster is overwhelming, PRINPAG wishes to commend the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Meteorological Agency, and all other state institutions for their tireless efforts in undertaking rescue operations and providing relief items to affected persons. We recognize the challenges inherent in responding to natural disasters of this magnitude and appreciate the commitment shown by these agencies in mitigating the cost of this tragedy.

We however, wish to admonish individuals, corporate entities, and local authorities whose carelessness, disregard for building codes, and improper waste disposal practices may have exacerbated the severity of these floods. The perennial issue of construction on waterways, the choking of drains with solid waste, and the failure of developers to adhere to planning regulations have undoubtedly contributed to the scale of the devastation we witness today. We call for an end to these negligent practices and urge all to respect environmental and spatial planning laws.

At this difficult juncture, the role of the media in informing, educating, and guiding the public cannot be overemphasized. We, therefore, urge all media houses, journalists, and content creators to use this unfortunate occasion to demonstrate unflinching professionalism and public-spiritedness. By providing accurate information, amplifying the voices of the affected, and highlighting relief efforts, the media can win the trust and confidence of the Ghanaian people. We encourage the media to show support in every form possible through responsible reporting, public education on safety measures, and advocacy for long-term solutions.

PRINPAG urges all Ghanaians to come together as one people, bound by the spirit of compassion and resilience, to support one another through this crisis. We are stronger together.

We call on the Government of Ghana to seize this unfortunate event as a critical opportunity to rethink, replan, and reshape our cities and communities. The devastation should serve as a catalyst for comprehensive urban renewal. Government must move beyond temporary fixes and commit to a holistic strategy that includes:

  1. Strict Enforcement of Building Codes: A zero-tolerance policy for construction on waterways and flood-prone zones.
  2. Re-engineering of Drainage Systems: Investment in modern, sustainable drainage infrastructure.
  3. Spatial Planning Review: Engaging urban planners, environmental experts, and local communities to design resilient cities.
  4. Public Education: Continuous campaigns to change attitudes towards waste disposal and environmental stewardship.

The gaps in our standards and enforcement mechanisms must be ironed out once and for all. This is the moment to ensure that governance makes tangible meaning to the lives of the people by safeguarding lives and property.

We caution the general public to remain vigilant and pay heed to all safety advisories issued by the appropriate authorities. Avoid crossing flooded streets, refrain from driving through submerged areas, and prioritize the safety of yourself and your loved ones. Your safety is paramount.

As the media, we are committed to walking this journey with the people of Ghana. We will continue to provide a platform for accountability, advocacy, and information during this challenging period.
