Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama not to sign the recently passed Tribunals Bill into law.
According to Bawumia, the bill is being advanced despite recommendations from the government’s own Constitution Review Committee, which reportedly proposed removing Regional Tribunals from the Constitution because the High Court already performs their functions. He argued that enacting the bill before broader constitutional reforms are considered would be premature.
His appeal follows Parliament’s passage of the bill despite objections from the Minority. The legislation has now been sent to President Mahama for presidential assent.
Bawumia also contended that:The bill is unnecessary because the existing court system can handle the relevant cases.
He also contends that the government should first address the recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee before introducing such reforms.
The President should withhold assent and allow for broader consultation on the future of the tribunal system, he said.
The Minority in Parliament has similarly urged President Mahama not to sign the bill, arguing that it could have significant implications for Ghana’s justice system and indicating it may pursue legal action if the bill becomes law.
