The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised members of the Tijjaniya Muslim Movement of Ghana planning to travel to Senegal for pilgrimage to exercise heightened caution, particularly over the security situation along some road corridors leading to Dakar.
In a travel advisory dated August 21, 2026, the Ministry said although Senegal remains safe for travellers, concerns have emerged over security conditions along certain routes used by long-distance travellers by road.
The Ministry urged prospective pilgrims to take the security situation into consideration when making their travel arrangements.
“In view of these concerns,” the Ministry said, travellers are strongly advised to consider air travel as the “most preferred, safe and secure means of transportation.”
It further appealed to pilgrims who may have already made arrangements to travel by road to reconsider their plans and opt for air transportation instead.
The advisory is specifically directed at members of the Tijjaniya Muslim Movement of Ghana embarking on pilgrimage to Senegal, where Dakar is expected to be a major destination.
The Ministry urged all pilgrims and prospective travellers to adhere to the advisory and prioritise their personal safety and security throughout the journey.
It also assured Ghanaian travellers that the government remains committed to their welfare and protection, adding that it will continue to monitor the security situation closely in collaboration with relevant international partners.
The advisory comes as Ghanaian Muslims prepare for pilgrimage-related travel to Senegal, with the government seeking to minimise potential risks associated with long-distance road journeys.
The Ministry encouraged travellers to plan carefully and make safety a central consideration in their choice of transportation.
