President John Dramani Mahama’s efforts to attract global technology investment and accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation agenda received a boost following high-level discussions with senior executives of Amazon on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting forms part of the Mahama administration’s broader strategy to leverage economic diplomacy to attract investment, create jobs and position Ghana as a leading technology and innovation hub in West Africa.
Government officials say the engagement reflects a deliberate shift towards building stronger partnerships with multinational corporations capable of supporting Ghana’s ambitions in digital infrastructure, skills development, innovation and private-sector growth.
Speaking after the meeting, Amazon Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, David Zapolsky, described the discussions with President Mahama as productive and indicated that Ghana could play an important role in the company’s efforts to expand broadband connectivity across Africa.
The development is being viewed as a significant endorsement of Ghana’s growing profile as a destination for technology-driven investment and digital innovation.
The Mahama administration has consistently identified digital transformation as a key pillar of its economic recovery and industrialisation agenda, arguing that improved access to reliable and affordable internet connectivity is essential for unlocking opportunities in education, healthcare, agriculture, financial services and entrepreneurship.
Analysts say partnerships with global technology firms could help bridge Ghana’s digital divide, particularly in rural and underserved communities where access to high-speed internet remains a challenge.
The discussions with Amazon also align with the government’s broader objective of attracting foreign direct investment into sectors capable of generating sustainable employment opportunities for Ghana’s growing youth population.
At a separate U.S.–Ghana Presidential Roundtable held during the UN General Assembly, President Mahama called for a new phase in Ghana–United States relations anchored on trade, investment, technology transfer and strategic economic partnerships rather than dependence on traditional development assistance.
The President noted that Ghana’s strategic location, political stability and position as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat provide a unique platform for international companies seeking access to the wider African market.
Government officials believe that deeper engagement with global technology companies such as Amazon could strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness in the digital economy while supporting efforts to transform the country into a regional centre for innovation, digital services and technology-enabled enterprise.
The Amazon engagement is the latest in a series of high-level meetings undertaken by President Mahama in New York aimed at mobilising investment, expanding economic opportunities and advancing Ghana’s long-term development agenda through strategic international partnerships.
