General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has paid a glowing tribute to late former General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie.
Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie who is popularly known as Sir John passed on in the afternoon of February 6, 2020 while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital from COVID-19.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia who described the late “Sir John” as a brother, told Sena Nombo on the Gold Power Drive the loss of the former NPP Scribe was a huge blow to Ghana’s political landscape.
He recounted what he said was his 20 year friendship with the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie which predated their time as General Secretaries of the two biggest parties.
The two men on several occasions stood on opposite sides on key issues when they were both scribes but Johnson Asiedu Nketia said their disagreements did not create animosities that threatened their relationship.
The long serving NDC General Secretary was certain the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie would be remembered for the non-discriminatory manner he treated everyone no matter their political beliefs.
He said his most recent conversation with “Sir John” regarded the burial of the latter’s late mother and sister.
He bemoaned the situation of the family of the late NPP Scribe because they now have to plan the burial of three close family members.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia said he was saddened by the loss of his “brother” Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie but was grateful for the resolute friendship they shared.
Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie until his death was the Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission.
