Ghana and India have set an ambitious goal of doubling their bilateral trade to US$6 billion, signalling a renewed commitment to strengthening economic cooperation and expanding investment opportunities between the two countries.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the target when he received the letters of credence from Ghana’s new Indian High Commissioner, His Excellency Surinder Bhagat, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Ablakwa said the new trade target reflects the strong and growing economic partnership between Ghana and India, noting that both countries are determined to deepen collaboration in key sectors that have the potential to transform Ghana’s economy.
He identified agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), and pharmaceutical manufacturing as priority areas that will drive the next phase of bilateral cooperation.
According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, increased collaboration in these sectors is expected to create employment opportunities for Ghana’s growing youth population while supporting the country’s industrialisation and economic transformation agenda.
He stressed that Ghana remains committed to strengthening its long-standing diplomatic and economic relations with India, describing the Asian nation as an important development partner with significant expertise in technology, healthcare, manufacturing, and agriculture.
Mr. Ablakwa expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation would unlock new investment opportunities, facilitate technology transfer, and boost trade between the two countries, positioning Ghana as a stronger economic hub in Africa.
For his part, the Indian High Commissioner, Surinder Bhagat, reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening its partnership with Ghana and pledged to work closely with the Ghanaian government to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The presentation of letters of credence formally marks the beginning of the High Commissioner’s diplomatic mission in Ghana and is expected to usher in a new phase of enhanced bilateral engagement aimed at boosting trade, investment, and sustainable development.
