The United Nation has assured its unflinching determination to support the Government of Ghana’s COVID – 19 recovery efforts.

According to the UN, currently there are joint efforts on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) financing catalytic investment projects that will help the government to consolidate the SDG financing landscape in the country, strengthen infrastructure financing and delivery of bankable projects.

Speaking at a high level ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of the world body in Accra under the theme “Shaping the Future Together: Ghana and the United Nations,” UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Charles Abani, said “through its COVID-19 Socio-Economic Response and Recovery Plan, will support the government of Ghana’s Covid-19 recovery efforts, build SDG Investor Maps to link the private sector to viable investment opportunities,

“Boost health investment with analysis and policy, and attract investments in the sanitation and waste management sectors. Our support, focusing on five pillars of Health, Protecting People, Economic Recovery, Macro-economic stability and multilateral support, and Social Cohesion and Community Resilience will not only help recovery but also build back better for a sustainable future, aligned with Ghana’s confident desire for self-reliance, articulated in Ghana Beyond Aid. It is bold and ambition, yes – but it is the right vision. And Ghana can achieve it” he emphasized.

For his part, a Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional integration, Charles Owuredu lauded the United Nations for its remarkable successes in the 75 years of its existence.

He also indicated that the anniversary is a time for introspection and sober reflection on the capacity of the UN to provide solutions to the current challenges of the world.

“There is the need for all Member States to recommit to the United Nations and to pursue measures to heal fractures that threaten the multilateral system and undermine our collective efforts towards the attainment of the SDGs. We have the chance to re-energize and deepen international cooperation to ensure that our world recovers from the effects of the COVID – 19 pandemic, and builds back better and stronger for the achievement of the future we want,” he said.

Touching on the agenda of promoting international peace and security, Mr Owiredu said Ghana had continued to provide critical support for the UN and other Regional peacekeeping operations in Africa and around the world.

According to him, Ghana’s role in that endeavour had been further enhanced by the sustained levels of troop contribution to peacekeeping operations and the distinction and excellence exhibited by compatriots, who served in various fields in pursuit of the goals of the organization.

“On this important occasion, we pay glowing tribute to the late Mr Kofi Annan, who, during his tenure as the Seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, contributed immeasurable to the shaping and pursuit of the global agenda for peace, security and development,” Mr Owiredu said.

“I also take this opportunity to pay homage to our uniformed men and women, who have and continue to exude Ghanaian excellence and discipline in fostering peace and security in conflict areas around the world, he added”
