Accra Metropolitan University Holds First Graduation, Honours IGP and Telecel CEO with Doctorate Degrees

The Accra Metropolitan University (Accra Met) over the weekend held its first graduation ceremony since receiving its presidential charter in 2024, transforming from Laweh University College into a fully autonomous institution The colourful event, themed “Empowered To Lead, Equipped To Transform,” celebrated the academic achievements of its first cohort of graduates.

Two distinguished personalities were conferred with honorary doctorate degrees for their exceptional leadership and contributions to national development.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno was awarded a Doctor of Laws (Honoris Causa) for his over 40 years of dedicated service in law enforcement. His career spans key leadership roles, including Accra Regional Operations Commander, Director-General of MTTD, Deputy IGP for Operations, and now IGP.

Presenting the citation, Ag. Vice-Chancellor Professor Goski Alabi praised Mr. Yohuno’s “unwavering dedication to public service and upholding the rule of law.”

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Yohuno expressed gratitude to the university’s leadership and the Ghana Police Service. He also addressed the recent electoral violence in the Ablekuma North election re-run on July 11, 2025, stating that a “full-scale investigation is ongoing, with all evidence, including video footage and eyewitness accounts, under review.”

“We are determined to ensure justice is served. Our response will remain professional, impartial, and firmly grounded in the law,” he assured, reaffirming the police service’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.

Also honoured was Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, Chief Executive Officer of Telecel Ghana, who received a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). She was recognised for her visionary leadership in the telecom industry, advocacy for women and youth in STEM, and for being the first Ghanaian woman to serve as CEO of Vodafone Ghana (now Telecel Ghana).

In a special highlight, Archbishop Charles Agyin Asare, Chancellor of Perez University College, graduated as a prized alumnus with an MBA in Human Resource Management.

Addressing the congregation, Professor Alabi hailed the day as a milestone in the university’s history.

“This is our first official congregation since receiving the Presidential Charter. It is not just a graduation, but a bold declaration of our future — a new era of educational excellence, relevance, and global connectivity,” she said.

She applauded the graduates for their resilience, adding that they were “the last of the pioneers under Laweh and the first torchbearers of Accra Met’s new legacy.”

The event also highlighted the university’s international achievements. In 2025, Accra Metropolitan University advanced to the semi-finals of the 8th Global Competition on the Design for the Future of Education, organised by Beijing Normal University in partnership with UNESCO. Accra Met was ranked among the top 20–30% of global participants under the theme of inclusive education.

Presence at the ceremony includes  founder of the University Professor Joshua Alabi, Mr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong  founder of Special Group of Companies,  Justice Barima Yaw Oppong Kodie, Director of the 

Ghana Law School, Dr. Ahmed Jinapor Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), among others.
