The John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage today announced a series of commemorative activities to mark the 13th anniversary of the passing of His Excellency, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Ghana’s third President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
The Chairman of the Committee, Alex Segbefia on behalf of the Memorial Heritage revealed that in a bid to document his profound impact, the Memorial Heritage launched Atta Mills Around the Regions, a publication compiling lectures delivered across Ghana’s 16 regions. The book chronicles the late legal scholar’s early life, his presidency, and the economic stability he fostered, which positioned Ghana’s economy as the most robust in the Fourth Republic during his tenure.
Since its inception on February 1, 2021, the Memorial Heritage has diligently worked to uphold President John Evans Atta Mills’ legacy through strategic programs, public engagement, and commemorative events. The past year has seen a deepening of this commitment with several impactful initiatives.
To mark the 13th anniversary, the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage announced the following key events;
The commemoration will begin with the 13th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture, scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at the Ohene Kofi Konadu Auditorium of the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
The lecture will be delivered under the theme “Atta Mills: A Case Study for the Fourth Republic.” The keynote address will be given by Charlotte Osei, former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, described as a seasoned lawyer and public administrator with extensive experience in electoral governance and institutional reform, and Ghana’s first female EC Chair and the event is to be be chaired by Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff .
They revealed that this event will be followed by a solemn Wreath-Laying Ceremony and Memorial Service on Friday, July 24, 2025, at 9:00 AM, at Asomdwee Park, President Atta Mills’ final resting place. This ceremony, they stated, offers a crucial opportunity for friends, family, admirers, and citizens to pay tribute to a leader who truly embodied humility, integrity, and selfless service.
The commemoration, according to them will conclude with the Atta Mills Memorial Hockey Tournament on Sunday, July 26, 2025, at 7:30 AM, at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium. This sporting event, they noted, celebrates one of Professor Mills’ personal passions, hockey, while actively promoting youth development and discipline through sports.
They affirmed that the events are open to the public, and broad participation is encouraged as the nation honors the memory of this selfless patriot.
The chairman issued a call to action, urging the media to lend their invaluable voice in publicizing these events. He implored civil society and the public to participate in large numbers, and invited all stakeholders and well-meaning Ghanaians to support their efforts through financial, moral, and intellectual contributions.
“Let us all unite to reflect on the profound values that defined Professor Mills’ life and leadership, and to collectively recommit to building a Ghana that truly works for everyone,” Alex Segbefia stated. “We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to preserving his legacy. As we mark thirteen years since his passing, his legacy remains a guiding light for all who believe in dignity, peace, and justice.”
The chairman concluded by emphasizing that this annual commemoration is more than just a moment of reflection; it is a vital contribution to national development. By promoting leadership rooted in integrity, accountability, and service, the Memorial Heritage believe they actively help shape a civic culture that strengthens Ghana’s democracy and inspires responsible nation-building.
