The Member of Parliament for Tempane, Lydia Lamisi Akanvariba, on behalf of the six members of Parliament from the Kusaug District in the Upper East Region has publicly addressed the escalating security concerns in Bawku, detailing a recent incident involving military personnel and civilians.
Addressing the media, Akanvariba reported that on July 13, an attack by unknown assailants on a military vehicle led to a severe reaction from soldiers. She stated that approximately six individuals, including school children and six Kusasi residents, were reportedly beaten, with several others sustaining injuries.
She conveyed the deep distress and anger of her constituents regarding the treatment they received emphasizing the critical need for immediate action, stressing that those injured and the families of any deceased victims must receive compensation. While acknowledging that lost lives cannot be restored, the MP stressed that the military should take responsibility for supporting affected families to help them find peace.
Despite the gravity of the situation, the Tempane MP urged her constituents in Bawku to remain patient, assuring them of the leadership’s unwavering commitment to their well-being and pledged that they would not be abandoned. Measures are reportedly being implemented to restore peace and order in the community.
In a move, Lydia Akanvariba revealed that the issue has been presented to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, with an appeal for his urgent intervention. She pleaded with the Asantehene to act swiftly to help maintain peace and order, enabling residents to live without fear.
