President John Mahama has expressed confidence in Dr. Johnson Asiama’s ability to restore trust and stability as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), despite concerns raised by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mahama defended Asiama’s appointment, highlighting the need for experienced and decisive leadership to address the challenges facing Ghana’s financial sector.
Asiama’s past legal challenges and his involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank have been cited by the NPP as reasons why he’s unfit for the role.
However, Mahama emphasized that Asiama’s experience and expertise make him the right person for the job.
In his remarks during the swearing-in ceremony, Mahama stated, “Ghana’s financial sector is in crisis, and the task ahead demands experience, foresight, and decisive leadership.
With Dr. Asiama heading the Bank of Ghana, I am confident that we will rebuild trust in the institution, restore stability, and put our economy back on the path of sustained growth”.
Mahama’s endorsement of Asiama is seen as a significant step in restoring trust in Ghana’s financial sector, which has been facing significant challenges in recent times.
