A major fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company Limited substation in Akosombo has disrupted power supply to parts of the country, the company has confirmed.
The incident occurred at about 2:01 p.m. on Thursday, affecting operations and power generation at the facility.
In a press statement, GRIDCo said emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene to contain the situation and begin assessment works.
“A fire outbreak has been reported at the Akosombo Substation causing a disruption in operations and power generation. As a result, power supply has been affected in some parts of the country,” the statement said.
The company added that efforts are underway to determine the full extent of the damage and restore supply as quickly as possible.
“A full evaluation is currently underway to determine the extent of the impact and to enable technical teams to commence processes to restore normal operations as swiftly as possible,” GRIDCo noted.
Authorities say engineers are working continuously to stabilise the system and minimise further disruptions.
“We wish to assure the public that our technical teams are actively working to manage the situation, and every effort is being made to stabilise the system and minimise disruptions,” the statement added.
GRIDCo has urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the situation is under control while further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.
