The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Military Engineers have completed the right-of-way clearance for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, paving the way for the next phase of construction of the major road project.

The military engineering team cleared 175.7 kilometres of the proposed road corridor, surpassing the original 175.6-kilometre target and completing the exercise on September 4, 2026, nine days ahead of the September 13 deadline.

The exercise forms part of preparations for the construction of the actual road pavement and involved clearing a 120-metre-wide right-of-way along the proposed expressway corridor.

The clearance covered three regions, with the Eastern Region accounting for 91.2 kilometres, followed by the Ashanti Region with 70 kilometres and the Greater Accra Region with 14.4 kilometres.

The operation was undertaken over a 20-week period, with the Ghana Armed Forces deploying two main clearing teams supported by two access-road teams. The teams operated during both day and night to accelerate the work.

Team A commenced from Asuboa at kilometre 68 and worked towards Accra at kilometre 16, while Team B worked from Asuboa towards Kumasi at kilometre 188.

Progress on the operation accelerated following mobilisation on March 27, 2026. An initial 11.2 kilometres was cleared between March 27 and April 22, increasing to 88.5 kilometres by June 23, 131.35 kilometres by July 29, and 161 kilometres by August 25.
By September 4, the military engineers had completed the targeted corridor, recording 175.7 kilometres of clearance.

Some of the townships along the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway corridor include Ablekuma, Adeiso, Asamankese, Asuboa, Akim Oda, Ayirebi, Akim Ofoase, Gyadamwa, Asante Ofoase and Kwaso.

The substantive right-of-way covers 175.6 kilometres, representing 100 percent of the designated corridor, with a width of 120 metres. An additional 8 kilometres was also cleared, bringing the total distance cleared by the GAF Military Engineers to 183.6 kilometres.

The completion of the exercise marks a significant preparatory milestone for the Accra–Kumasi Expressway Project. It has removed vegetation and other obstacles within the designated corridor and created the conditions necessary for subsequent construction activities.

The deployment of GAF Military Engineers also highlights the Armed Forces’ growing contribution to major national infrastructure projects through their engineering and technical capabilities.

With the right-of-way clearance completed, attention is expected to turn to the next phase of the project, particularly the construction of the road pavement and associated infrastructure along the corridor linking Accra, the Eastern Region and Kumasi.

The early completion of the exercise is particularly significant, as the military engineers finished the critical preparatory work nine days ahead of the September 13 target date.
