Ghana and Sierra Leone Strengthen Bilateral Relations with Inauguration of Joint Commission

The governments of Ghana and Sierra Leone have signaled a new era of diplomatic and economic cooperation following the inaugural session of the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC) in Accra. This milestone meeting, the first since the signing of the initial agreement in 2013, aimed to reactivate a dormant partnership through the formalization of six Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) and a comprehensive bilateral agreement.

Addressing the session, Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described the activation of the PJCC as a timely response to a shared desire to deepen relations. He noted that the groundwork for this session was laid during high-level discussions between President John Dramani Mahama and President Julius Maada Bio in Freetown earlier this year. The newly initialed frameworks cover critical sectors including energy, health, the cocoa industry, and defense and security cooperation.

The Minister emphasized that while the signing of these documents is a significant achievement, the true value of the partnership lies in rigorous implementation. He revealed that Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established a dedicated delivery unit to track the progress of these agreements. “These MOUs and agreements will not in themselves materialize or bring us to our destination,” he cautioned. “The hard work now begins. We have to carry out the follow-ups needed.”

Reflecting on the historical solidarity between the two nations, the Minister recalled the mutual support provided during the Ebola crisis and the 2017 Freetown floods. He also expressed gratitude for the recent visit of the Sierra Leonean leadership to commiserate with Ghana following a tragic helicopter crash in August 2025 that claimed the lives of some high-ranking officials.

The session concluded with a call to transform these strategic frameworks into tangible economic benefits, defining the future of Ghana-Sierra Leone relations through “results-oriented partnership” and enduring regional solidarity.
