The Government of the Republic of Ghana has issued a formal and stern condemnation regarding the unilateral military invasion of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela by the United States, characterizing the maneuver as a grave violation of established international law.
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ghanaian government expressed profound alarm over the events of January 3, 2026, which involved the reported abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores by U.S. forces. The Ministry emphasized that Ghana maintains strong reservations against the unilateral use of force and strongly deplores acts that violate the Charter of the United Nations. Such actions, the statement noted, represent a direct assault on the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of sovereign states.

The Ghanaian Government is reportedly monitoring the situation with great concern, asserting that attempts at the occupation of foreign territories and the apparent pursuit of external control over oil resources carry extremely adverse implications for international stability. The statement specifically highlighted remarks from the U.S. Presidency regarding a transition period and the involvement of American oil companies, describing such rhetoric as reminiscent of the colonial and imperialist era.
Ghana maintains that these colonial ambitions should have no place in the modern global order. To permit such actions, the Ministry argued, is to place the entire international community at risk and undermine the sovereignty of every nation. Reaffirming its commitment to the principle of self-determination, Ghana holds the firm view that only the Venezuelan people should freely determine their political and democratic future.
The statement concluded with an urgent call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions and the unconditional release of President Maduro and his wife. The Government of Ghana pledged to continue defending its long-held principled position against invasion, occupation, and all forms of violation of international law.
