The Ghana Police Service has issued a strong warning to content creators and social media users against engaging in acts that border on criminality under the guise of digital content creation.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Emergency Command Centre at the National Police Headquarters in Accra, Director of Public Affairs, DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, expressed concern over what she described as a growing trend of irresponsible and unlawful conduct on online platforms.
According to her, the Police have observed instances where some individuals, in the name of creating content for social media, have allegedly issued threats against security personnel, spread misinformation and disinformation, and caused fear and panic among the public.
“The Ghana Police Service has observed with grave concern a rising situation where some persons, under the guise of content creation, engage in acts or conduct that border on criminality,” she stated.
DCOP Grace Ansah-Akrofi cautioned that while content creation and digital expression remain legitimate activities, individuals who cross the line into criminal behaviour would be arrested and prosecuted.
She stressed that perpetrators of such acts would face the full rigours of the law.
The Police administration also disclosed that it has intensified online patrols and surveillance operations to monitor activities in digital spaces and prevent criminal exploitation of social media platforms.
According to the Service, the move forms part of broader efforts to maintain public order, protect security personnel, and combat the spread of false information capable of undermining national security.
The caution comes amid growing concerns over the increasing use of social media platforms for sensational content, fabricated reports, threats and prank-related activities that often trigger public alarm.
The Ghana Police Service urged content creators and the general public to act responsibly online and ensure that their activities do not violate the laws of the country.
