The Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali (Naval Capt. Rtd), has announced that the Authority will soon roll out the National Seafarer Development Policy aimed at strengthening Ghana’s maritime workforce and creating more employment opportunities for young people.
According to Dr. Ali, the policy will provide a comprehensive framework to develop the country’s seafaring industry while positioning seafaring as a viable and sustainable career path for Ghanaian youth.
He made the announcement during the celebration of the 2026 International Day of the Seafarer, held under the global theme, “My Harassment-Free Ship,” while emphasizing the importance of protecting and supporting seafarers who play a vital role in sustaining global trade.
Dr. Ali noted that the maritime sector remains the backbone of international commerce, stressing that investing in the development of skilled Ghanaian seafarers would enhance the country’s competitiveness in the global shipping industry.
He added that the upcoming policy forms part of the Authority’s broader commitment to expanding opportunities for young Ghanaians and ensuring that the nation builds a resilient and highly skilled maritime workforce capable of meeting international standards.
The Director-General reaffirmed the Ghana Maritime Authority’s commitment to promoting the welfare, professional development, and global competitiveness of Ghanaian seafarers through strategic policies and partnerships.
