Government has cleared 70% of the right-of-way for the dualized Accra-Kumasi Expressway, the flagship infrastructure project under its “Big Push Program.” Full site clearing along the entire route is scheduled for completion by the first week of September 2026, paving the way for construction to begin on the project aimed at cutting travel time between Ghana’s two largest commercial cities to just two hours.
Presenting the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review of the 2026 Budget in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026, the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, detailed the rapid execution of preliminary site preparation and the project’s financial backing.
Dr. Ato Forson revealed that as of July 2, 2026, $1.7 billion has been secured and deposited into a dedicated project account at the Bank of Ghana. He added that comprehensive engineering designs, environmental impact assessments, and feasibility studies are advancing on schedule and will wrap up by the end of August 2026. Procurement for the primary construction contract is slated to commence immediately after, in September 2026.
The project features a 176-kilometer, six-lane bidirectional expressway designed to modern international standards. To be executed by the Ghana Armed Forces, the initial land clearing has already covered 122 kilometers of the 120-meter-wide corridor in just 12 weeks.
Beyond significantly reducing travel time, the finished expressway will incorporate modern interchanges, bridges, intelligent transport systems, electronic tolling, designated emergency response centers, and rest stops. Dr. Forson emphasized that the project will alleviate heavy traffic congestion, enhance overall road safety, reduce freight and passenger transport costs, and serve as a major catalyst for regional economic integration.
