While initial reports indicated that seven members of the Ghana National Tomatoes Traders and Transporters Association were killed while conducting lawful trade, a eighth victim has tragically succumbed to injuries. This individual was among four compatriots receiving intensive medical treatment following the February 14 assault in the northern province.
President John Dramani Mahama and the Government of Ghana have conveyed their most profound commiserations to the families and loved ones of the deceased. In a strongly worded statement, the Government condemned the “mindless act of terror” and expressed deep solidarity with the Government and people of Burkina Faso during this period of national mourning.
The administration emphasized that this despicable horror serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for a new collective approach to regional security. A sentiment, which echoes the calls for enhanced cooperation recently reiterated by President Mahama during last month’s High-Level Consultative Conference on Regional Cooperation and Security.
In an immediate humanitarian response, President Mahama has instructed the Ghana Air Force to conduct a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) by air for all surviving Ghanaian victims. Following competent medical consultations, these victims are expected to arrive in Ghana later today for specialized care. Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso and embassy staff remain actively seized with the matter, maintaining direct contact with the injured to ensure their welfare.
Concurrently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has instituted new guidelines for travel to high-risk areas within the sub-region, placing selected Embassies and High Commissions on “High Consular Alert.” The Government advises all citizens planning essential travel to areas of concern to first contact the Ministry or accredited Embassies for necessary security guidance.
For Ghanaians already residing in jurisdictions impacted by violent extremism, the Government recommends that movement be strictly restricted. Citizens are further urged to maintain regular communication with Ghanaian missions, provide emergency contact information, and ensure that all identification documents are readily accessible to expedite consular assistance if required.
