The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has dissociated itself from drivers charging arbitrary transport fares in Accra and beyond saying those responsible are not registered members of the union.
Speaking on the Gold Morning Show with Sena Numbo on Thursday, GPRTU Public Relations Officer Alhaji Abass Moro said the union does not condone fare hikes outside approved rates.
“Those charging higher fares are not our members,” Alhaji Moro stated. He however did not outline specific sanctions the union would impose on members found charging unapproved fares.
Alhaji Moro called on law enforcement authorities to help address the issue, noting that previous attempts to get police to sanction offenders had not yielded results.
“It is the duty of the police to enforce the law,” he said, urging security agencies to step in and curb the practice.
