The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed Thursday morning’s power outages in parts of the country to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, August 20, 2026, GRIDCo said the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic tripping of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal generating plants.
According to GRIDCo, the automatic shutdown was part of the power system’s protection mechanisms designed to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
The disturbance consequently resulted in the loss of electricity supply to some parts of the country.
GRIDCo said its engineers, working in coordination with other power sector agencies, immediately moved to isolate the affected transmission line and began a safe and systematic restoration of the national power system.
The company indicated that electricity supply had already been restored to some affected areas, while restoration efforts continued to reconnect the remaining affected customers.
It assured the public that all relevant technical teams had been fully mobilised and were working urgently to achieve complete restoration.
“GRIDCo regrets the inconvenience caused by this temporary outage,” the company said, while assuring customers that efforts were ongoing to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
GRIDCo said it would continue to provide updates as further information became available and appealed to the public for patience, understanding and cooperation during the restoration process.
