The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, joined the President of the Czech Republic, His Excellency Petr Pavel, to commission the newly completed Kpone Katamanso Municipal Hospital in the Greater Accra Region.
The 40-bed capacity facility, equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, is part of a broader initiative under the previous administration to improve access to quality healthcare across Ghana. The hospital forms part of 12 health facilities launched 24 months ago.
The Kpone Katamanso Hospital boasts a comprehensive setup, including an outpatient department and public health wing, a surgical suite with a theatre, recovery ward, and sterilisation unit, a delivery unit and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray department. It also provides beds for male, female, and pediatric patients, a service block with laundry, stores, and a cold room, as well as staff accommodation.

Additional elements of the project include the supply and installation of medical equipment, a one-year post-completion warranty and maintenance plan, and staff training programs.
The €75.5 million project was funded through financing secured from Erste Group Bank AG and Ceska Sporitelna a.s., with an export credit guarantee of €8.612 million provided by EGAP—the Export Guarantee and Insurance Corporation of the Czech Republic.
Speaking at the commissioning, Minister Akandoh expressed gratitude to the Czech government and people for their continued support.
“President Mahama’s government is committed to completing and operationalizing all hospital projects across the country. We do not believe in commissioning hospitals only to lock them up or abandoning projects started by previous governments for political gain. Our vision is to ensure every commissioned facility is put to use so communities can enjoy equitable access to quality healthcare,” he said.
He also invited the hospital’s newly assigned doctors, nurses, and staff to step forward as a public testament to the government’s commitment to operational readiness.
President Petr Pavel, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of health infrastructure and reaffirmed the Czech Republic’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development in the health sector.
The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, also underscored the urgent need to operationalize newly completed hospitals to make healthcare accessible to all Ghanaians.
The remaining eleven health facilities, located across various regions, are expected to be commissioned and operationalized soon.
These include Jumap, Nkwatia, Kwabeng, Achiase, and Adukrom in the Eastern Region; Suame, Drobonso, Sabronum, Manso Nkwanta, and Twedie in the Ashanti Region; and Mim in the Ahafo Region.
