The Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has outlined significant measures being implemented to curb the alarming rise in armed robbery attacks, particularly on the Yeji-Kumasi highway in the Bono East Region. His remarks followed recent tragic incidents that have heightened security concerns in the area.
The Minister’s parliamentary address comes in the wake of a fatal armed robbery attack on Sunday, July 6, 2025, between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM, at Domeabra, a suburb of Yeji in the Pru East District. Reports indicate that robbers signaled a vehicle to stop. As the driver decelerated, one of the assailants fired into the vehicle, fatally wounding a young livestock seller in the jaw. The victim succumbed to his injuries before the vehicle could come to a complete halt. The perpetrators subsequently forced all passengers to lie on the road before absconding with their belongings.
The Yeji-Kumasi highway has unfortunately become a known hotspot for such criminal activities. In response to these persistent threats, the Member of Parliament for Pru East, Emmanuel Kwaku Boam, raised the issue on the floor of Parliament, questioning the Minister, Muntaka Mubarak on the specific steps the Interior Ministry was taking to prevent further attacks.
In his response, the Minister revealed that the Ministry has deployed over 50 security personnel to the affected area to help curtail criminal activities on the highway and its environs. He further stated that vehicles specifically designated for highway patrol have also been deployed to enhance surveillance and rapid response capabilities.
Reacting to these ministerial assurances in an exclusive interview with Radio Gold, Kwaku Boam expressed his satisfaction with the efforts undertaken by the Interior Ministry.
“This move will go a long way to curb the crime rate in the area,” he stated, adding that he and his constituents had been living in fear whenever they used the road. “Therefore, I’m happy with the measures put in place by the ministry,” he concluded, expressing optimism for improved security on the highway.
The member of Parliament for the Pru East Constituency called on all persons, irrespective of their political affiliation to come together to tackle the issue by providing the necessary intelligence required to aid the police in their investigation.
