Koku Anyidoho, the former Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has weighed in on a viral photo showing New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia enjoying coconut water during a campaign stop.
In a post on his X page, Anyidoho, who has been praising Bawumia for his campaign approach, drew a parallel between the Vice President’s coconut moment and then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s famous Kalyppo picture that went viral during the height of his presidential campaign in 2016.
“It was once Kalyppo; now it is coconut water. A man must quench his campaign thirst one way or the other. It’s not easy,” Anyidoho commented, acknowledging the challenges of campaigning.
Back in 2016, candidate Akufo-Addo’s popularity experienced a significant boost after a picture of him drinking from a box of Kalyppo fruit juice spread rapidly online. The viral image sparked a trend that saw many New Patriotic Party members and supporters of the candidate recreating their own versions of the photo with Kalyppo.
Anyidoho’s comparison highlights the importance of relatable moments during political campaigns, as candidates seek to connect with voters on a personal level. Whether it’s sipping on Kalyppo or enjoying coconut water, these candid moments can help humanize candidates and generate positive buzz among the electorate.
